Greyton is a visually engaging 90 minute drive away from Cape Town and is situated at the base of a gorge in the impressive Riviersonderend Mountain range. The range is part of a collection of private and municipal land forming a conservatory. The area has a Mediterranean climate which supports fynbos and other eye catching species such as ericas and proteas . Numerous water courses are lined with the likes of wild almond trees and stream conebush.

VIVID Greyton Gravel Tour

The town is flanked by two rivers, one of which originates in the mountain resulting in crisp clear water that invites on a balmy day.

The Greyton area was first occupied by a tribe of Khoi, known as the Hessequas who traded cattle with the Dutch East India Company for provisions on their ships en route to the East. In 1738 the first mission station in South Africa was established by Moravians to the West of the Greyton valley and is named Genadendal.

VIVID Greyton Gravel Tour - Cattle

Many of the town’s original buildings and features are still there to be seen, including the original lei-water (irrigation) system of street furrows, the town kraal, a blacksmith’s house and forge, the school’s boarding house, churches and a scattering of the earliest cottages built between 1854 and 1860. An old shepherd’s cottage built prior to 1840 and now part of “The Old Potter’s Inn” is the place to go for fresh beer brewed on the premises.

The VIVID Greyton Gravel Tour is a 2-day 2-night exploration East, West and in the historic town of Greyton. We stay in the same accommodation both nights and have 2-different price packages depending on your taste of splendid or more splendid.
