Malmesbury 70km loop
A hop, skip and a jump takes us to Malmesbury, our early morning departure point, situated in the heart of the Swartland wine route and a mere 65km from Cape Town. Superb Gravel hard-pack meets rubber on the town’s edge and one is quickly immersed in a rural and agricultural landscape with unobstructed views (weather permitting) towards Kasteelberg and the distant mountain ranges of Boland, Skurweberge and Cederberge.
Our recce cycle was on a Saturday morning and for the first 30km we encountered 2-bakkies and a tractor before the short tar road into Riebeek Wes and Riebeek Kasteel.
Riebeek Kasteel, our coffee and breakfast stop is known for its aesthetic beauty and is home to the oldest hotel in South Africa, The Royal Hotel. The town is well known for its olives and Shiraz red wines. Yum! For the curious, we do a quick cycle exploration of the town before heading back to Malmesbury.
The return journey takes us on a different route via the Western slopes of Kasteelberg and quiet rural farm roads. On the return leg we encountered 1-‘bakkie’, South African for a ‘light pick up truck, a Toyota Corolla and a tractor. Although relatively close to the metropolis of Cape Town, this Vivid experience has a real country feel to it with great gravel roads, no traffic, safe riding and vistas towards the distant mountain ranges.
Malmesbury Shorter 40km loop
The shorter loop is for those developing their fitness levels or those of you with half-charged batteries. The 40km does not take in the quaint and artistically energetic town of Riebeek Kasteel and is something to work towards for the next Vivid Experience.
The 40km option is pretty much all superb Gravel roads and follows a similar out and back as the longer 70km route.
